Plenary Session 1
- Global Drivers influencing Change:
Global prosperity has created growth opportunities, but it also has also created challenges on the landscape. Speakers will highlight global economic, environmental and social drivers that influence and shape their actions and decisions on land use.
Speakers:
- Ms. Laurie Wayburn, President and Co-CEO of the Pacific Forest Trust, (California, USA)
- Mr. Gord Lambert, VP Sustainable Development, Suncor Energy Inc., on behalf of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) (Alberta, Canada)
- Dr. Vic. Adamowicz, Distinguished University Professor, Department of Rural Economy, Faculty of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences, University of Alberta (Alberta, Canada)
Plenary Session 2
– Creating certainty when values and land use policies collide:
To provide a climate of certainty, we have to make many practical decisions – decisions involving competing interests, conflicting values and complicated tradeoffs. Speakers will address the challenges of influencing policy decisions while encouraging support for other values – wildlife, safety, conservation, recreation etc.

Innovative Tools, Technology and Approaches to Implement Effective Regional Land Use Planning and Operations
Moderator: Mr. John Pineau
Modern land use demands greater precision in planning and operations. Three presentations including case examples will illustrate how leading-edge technologies are providing fibre supply options. Considerations include fibre access and utilization, community impacts, and diversification of activities along the forestry-agricultural interface.
Presentation 1: Management Regimes for Short-rotation Woody Crops – Options and Opportunities
- Mr. Derek Sidders, Canadian Wood Fibre Centre
Diversifying fibre supply options while integrating land use along the forest fringe, using high yield/short rotation woody crop systems for forest products, bio-energy and carbon values…
Presentation 2: National Inventory Research – Regional Application of Tools and Technology for Global Purpose
- Dr. Doug Pitt, Research Scientist, Canadian Wood Fibre Centre
Examining various tools and technology being tested across regions of Canada to bring about improvement in the production of enhanced forest inventory.
Presentation 3: Operationalizing Remote Sensing Technologies for Natural Resources Inventories and Integrated Land Use in Ontario
- Mr. Murray Woods, Senior Analyst - Forested Landscapes, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources
Using LiDAR and high-resolution multi-spectral digital imagery to increase precision in forest management and land use planning, and to improve efficiency in logistics and operations.
Plenary Session 3 - Case Studies: Integrating Opposing Land Uses:
Industrial development and resource protection can, in some cases, coexist; however, there are challenges. Speakers will draw on specific operational examples demonstrating how they are managing and integrating opposing land uses.
Speakers:
- Mr. Greg Toth, Project Director, TMX, Kinder Morgan Canada (Alberta, Canada)
- Mr. John Olyslager, Environmental Assessment Scientist, Parks Canada (Alberta, Canada)
- Dr. Rick Bonar, Chief Biologist and Planning Coordinator, Hinton Wood Products, Woodlands, A Division of West Fraser Mills Ltd. (Alberta, Canada
- Mr. Mark Sherrington, Senior Environment Planner, Shell Canada Upstream Gas (Alberta, Canada)
- Dr. Guy Swinnerton, Professor Emeritus, University of Alberta, Beaver Hills Initiative (Alberta, Canada)
Plenary Session 4 - IF I WAS KING and RAN THE LAND, here's what I WOULD DO...
Alberta’s prosperity has created opportunities for our economy and people, but it also has created challenges for Alberta's landscapes. Industrial activity, municipal development, infrastructure, recreation and conservation interests often compete to use the same land base. This in turn puts stress on the finite capacity of our land, air, water and habitat. Alberta-based speakers will share their perspectives on how they would manage Alberta's landscapes, if they were king. You will also learn how Alberta is planning for and managing these competing interests.
