Dimensions of Forest Management in a World Heritage Site Protected Area

This tour will examine the antecedents, current challenges and adaptive management strategies in Jasper National Park, a key park within the Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site chain. Participants will see the linkage between the cultural practices of early Metis residents of the park and current vegetation management practices inherent in the Firesmart/Forestwise program of the park. Wildlife and forest pathogen management challenges and responses will also be highlighted, along with reclamation and restoration work related to the recent development of a major pipeline through the park. Park managers will describe the role of research in informing their adaptive forest management program and practices.
