Message from the Chair of the Host Planning Committee
2010 CIF-IFC Annual General Meeting and Conference
The Rocky Mountain Section of the Canadian Institute of Forestry takes immense pleasure in formally inviting you to the 102nd Annual Meeting to be held in wonderful Jasper, Alberta located in the world famous Jasper National Park (Wonderful By Nature). Designated as a World Heritage Site, Jasper National Park was established in 1907 and is the largest of the Rocky Mountain Parks. Canada is very proud of this very special place with its impressive mountain vistas, wildlife, unique ecosystems and recreational opportunities.
Throughout Canada and many parts of the world global economic forces have shaped local and regional economies as well as public attitudes and expectations related to land and resource management. Over the past 10 years in particular, land and resources management have become more complex requiring managers to become increasingly integrated in their approach to meet local and regional needs. Periods of rapid economic growth and industrial activity as just experienced have also given rise to the consideration of ecological goods and services, carbon management, and heightened concerns of water and biodiversity, while at the same time striving to promote economic development. The land use challenges are clear.
Jasper National Park offers a sharp reminder of our natural heritage that we stand to lose if not for the application of our collective responsibility to ensure and implement wise landuse decisions; our future depends on it.
We will have an impressive group of presenters to address the challenges, issues and approaches national and international jurisdiction have experienced in support of the theme of Regional Landuse Planning in the Global Economy. Sessions will focus on land-use strategies (past, present and future) employed by industry and government, at all scales - internationally, regionally and locally - to address current and future challenges. Guided field tours of Jasper’s landscape management and the adjacent Foothills Management Area forest are planned to complement and reinforce the land-use theme of the Annual Meeting.
As you might expect, the CIF/IFC Annual Meeting in Alberta would not be complete without its historical western style barbecue complete with live music. We also have a very exciting social program to complement our full agenda. The companion schedule of activities will provide for a host of opportunities that will interest just about anyone.
We encourage you to mark September 26 – 29, 2010 on your calendar and register for the CIF/IFC Annual Meeting. Together, the Annual Meeting and the take home experience of Jasper will be a combination of learning and enjoyment. Register early; we look forward to seeing your there.
Yours truly,
Keith M. McClain, Ph.D., R.P.F.
