Geographic Information Systems Program - Technician

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Foothills Research Institute (FRI), with its office located in Hinton, Alberta, is seeking a motivated individual to be part of our Foothills Research Institute GIS Program. If you would like to join a dynamic and innovative GIS team and live in the foothills near Jasper National Park, this job is for you! Reporting to the FRI GIS Coordinator, the GIS Technician will support FRI program areas by providing project support, maintenance of datasets, handling data requests, database management, spatial and statistical analysis, cartography, training and technical support to staff and program partners. The position requires skills in spatial analysis, database design, geodatabases, Internet mapping technologies, an aptitude or interest in programming, and proven interpersonal and team skills. Duties will include GIS support, data management, and cartographic mapping support requirements of all research projects carried out by the organization. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
o Demonstrated experience applying GIS pertaining to fisheries and aquatics, forestry, wildlife and other natural resource-based research in Alberta.
o Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
o Strong project management skills.
o Ability to meet multiple deadlines and the balancing of multiple priorities.
o Strong oral, written, and electronic communication skills.
o Enthusiastic and motivated to enhance and learn new GIS skills.

QUALIFICATIONS
o Minimum of a recognized Diploma in Geographic Information Systems or related technical diploma in Natural Resources or Environmental Science.
o Minimum 1 year work experience or working knowledge of ESRI software and extensions, especially ArcInfo, ArcGIS 9.x, Spatial Analyst.
o Experience in working with relational databases (MS Access, SQL Server) and exposure to programming languages (Python, VBA, ArcObjects) is a strong asset.

SALARY
Commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications.
