2011 Open House Recap

On October 3, 2011, FRI held an Open House at the Lister Centre, University of Alberta, Edmonton. It was a wonderful opportunity for people to come out and learn something about the research and tools that have been developed by our researchers. Many programs had displays that demonstrated how they are meeting the challenge and finding answers to partners’ questions.

Peter Murphy, Professor Emeritus in Forestry at the University of Alberta gave a presentation on behalf of the Adaptive Forest Management – History Program. His talk was a fascinating history of logging on the Whirlpool River in Jasper National Park in the first part of the 20th century.

The second presentation was given by Kevin Solarik, a researcher with the Canadian Forest Service in Edmonton. Kevin gave an interesting overview of Emend (Ecosystem Management Emulating Natural Disturbance) which as been recognized as one of the largest biologically based research projects in the world.

The Open House was a perfect way to ease into the Annual General Meeting that followed on October 4.
