NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship - Karine Pigeon - December 2009

FRI Grizzly Bear Program Researcher, Karine Pigeon, receives prestigious NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship

Karine was awarded the Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship to pursue post graduate studies at the Université Laval, Département de Biologie, Québec, QC, Canada. Karine’s research will look at climate change and its ecological implication in the long-term conservation of grizzly bears.

The Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) Program provides financial support to outstanding eligible students pursuing master's or doctoral studies in the natural sciences or engineering at a Canadian university. The Government of Canada established these prestigious scholarships, to be awarded through national competitions by the granting agencies, to ensure a reliable supply of highly qualified personnel to meet the needs of Canada's knowledge economy. Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholars will help renew faculty at Canadian universities and will be the research leaders of tomorrow.\

In 2009, less than 500 NSERC grants were given at the PhD level (including the CGS and PGS for 1, 2, or 3 years). It is the same evaluation process for both the CGS and the PGS, only the top grant holders get CGS awards, the rest get PGS.

There are 10 different selection committees who evaluate applications. Within the Earth and Ecology science section (which is where Karines’ application was sent), 29% of applicants received grants (including CGS and PGS).

Karine is the only biology graduate student in Québec to have obtained this award in 2009. Only two other graduate students obtained the same award in Quebec, that same year, one student in chemistry, the other in psychology.
